I am new to sgml validation. My assignment is to find an sgml
validation program that works on linux. I have a dtd and one sgml
file to test. So, here's my first questions

Is sgmlcheck/sgmltools current (this is already available on our
computer) or has it been replaced by a new and improved validation
program? If it is not the most current validation program out there
what is and does it really matter?

I'm only looking for validation and I'm not doing any conversions.

thanks in advance,
mb

See the "nsgmls" program that comes with SP:

OpenSP is bit more up to date:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/openjade

Most recent Linux distributions come with a pre-installed nsgmls or
onsgmls (the nsgmls variant from OpenSP), so a validating parser should
already be available.

Thank you both very much. I hope I can post follow up questions as I proceed?

Right now I'm looking at SP. I have the documentation and I still
have some questions. Is there a specific directory that the dtd's and
entities need to go in? Are there environment variables I need to
set? If this information is found somewhere in the documentation
please point me in the right direction because I can't seem to find
it.

Read Chapter 4 (Parsing and validation) in my book on SGML and XML Tools
(Kluwer, 1998). There's a copy of that chapter online at
